Many children rebel against doing homework. It isn’t because they don’t like school or their teacher. Their rebellion is just a natural reaction to the work. They are just being a normal kid. There are several things that parents can do to support their children when they need to do homework.
First, set a regular time for your child to do her homework. Keep in mind that what works for one family might not work for your family. Some parents have their children work on their homework as soon as they get home from school. Other parents let their children play for an hour or two before doing homework. Some have their children do their schoolwork after supper.
While you may be tempted to sign your child up for dance lessons, soccer, art classes, and piano lessons after school, keep your child’s extra curricular activities fairly limited. Too many activities will interfere with the time available for your child to do her homework.
Set up a special place for your child to do her homework. This could be sitting at the kitchen table or getting her a simple desk for her room. Get a lamp if the overhead lighting isn’t very good. Make sure she has plenty of supplies such as pencils, erasers, pens, paper, and computer paper to print up her assignments.
Don’t have the TV playing while your children are doing their homework. It is too distracting. Don’t let your children’s friends call them when they are doing homework. Keep the household noise level to a minimum. Don’t let others slam doors, vacuum, and yell or talk loud. If you have a toddler, keep him in a different room so he won’t be too noisy or distracting.
